Some change (and good news) is on the horizon, which prompted Derek and I to head out on the town this past Friday night. I was craving a big ole’ juicy burger (and no, I’m not pregnant), so we decided to check out The Nook in St. Paul. We arrived around 8:30pm and were joined by our dear friend, Kevin. They let us know that our wait would be about 25 minutes, so we stood outside and visited in the warm October weather.

Once inside, we were seated quickly and soon had beer in our glasses. We took some time to study the menu — with so many enticing options, we had to make sure we made the right decision! The Reuben Burger ($8.95) with Sweet Potato Fries (an extra $1.75) was decidedly calling my name, while Derek settled on the Mitch Ham Ham Burger ($8.50) and Keith chose the Chicken Breast Salad ($8.25).

We didn’t wait long and our burgers (and salad and fries) were upon us. The Reuben Burger was scrumptious — it was loaded with corned beef, swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and 1000 island. YUM! The bun was the perfect backdrop — soft and pillowy — and soaked up all the delicious burger juices. The beef patty itself was probably the best part of the burger. It tasted fresh and was nicely tender and flavorful. The sweet potato fries that I ordered came crinkly and lightly dusted with cinnamon sugar (I’ve never seen that before!). They were nicely crisp, but I wouldn’t get them again on account of the cinnamon sugar dusting — it just didn’t do it for me, though I’m sure most people love them!

The Mitch Ham Ham burger was topped with shaved, grilled ham, bourbon sauce, and swiss cheese. I didn’t get a bite of it since Derek happily wolfed it down immediately upon arrival, but boy, did it look heavenly! He had the regular fries on the side which were pretty standard as far as burger joint fries go.

Kevin’s salad arrived lookin’ fresh (and huge!) as salads go, with heaps of green pepper, blue cheese, chicken, onion, cucumber, and tomato. We didn’t hear any complaints for his side of the table as he chowed down.

We lingered over our food and drink for awhile — talking and checking out the local sports memorabilia on the walls.  Did I mention that Joe Mauer and Paul Molitor both have a burger named after them on the menu? Both were baseball stars at Cretin-Derham which is right across the street! We finally wrapped up and settled up the tab about $60 after tip for the 3 of us. If you’re looking for a burger to satisfy your every craving, be sure to check out The Nook!

Tight (space-wise), yet friendly and cozy with a neighborhood sports-bar vibe.

Excellent. Welcoming and helpful.

Completely appetizing!

Our burgers were incredible — these ground beef gems have won numerous awards and accolades.

Value for Dollars
A pretty typical tab for a non-happy hour burger joint. We didn’t quite catch the late-night happy hour that starts at 11.

But don’t take my word for it!
